Let’s be honest—sugar cravings don’t just disappear because you’ve been “good” all day.
They show up when you’re tired. When you’re bored. When dinner didn’t quite hit the spot. And sometimes… just because.
As someone living with type 2 diabetes, I’ve learned that the goal isn’t to eliminate cravings completely—it’s to manage them in a way that feels realistic, sustainable, and, most importantly, enjoyable.
Over time, these are the foods I keep coming back to. Not because they’re perfect—but because they work for me.
🥚 Eggs – My Go-To for Staying Full
Whether it’s scrambled in the morning or a quick boiled egg as a snack, eggs help keep me satisfied for hours. When I start my day with protein, I notice fewer cravings creeping in later.
🥜 Almonds – Simple, Crunchy, Reliable
A small handful goes a long way. Almonds give me that crunch I sometimes crave, but without sending my blood sugar on a rollercoaster.
🥣 Greek Yogurt – A Solid Base
This is one of my staples. I’ll add berries, maybe a sprinkle of cinnamon, and it becomes something that feels like a treat—but works with me, not against me.
🍎 Apples (With a Twist) – The Balanced Sweet Fix
On their own, apples can hit a little fast. But paired with natural peanut butter, almond butter, or even a bit of cheese, that’s where the magic happens. Sweet, satisfying, and much more balanced.
🌾 Oats – Slow and Steady
Not the instant packets—the real stuff. Oats keep me full and grounded, especially when I need something warm and comforting.
🌱 Chia Seeds – Small but Mighty
I use these all the time—in my breakfast, mixed into yogurt, or even sprinkled over salads. They’re an easy add-on that helps keep hunger in check and adds a bit of texture too.
🍫 Dark Chocolate – Yes, Really
This one matters. Cutting out everything you enjoy never lasts. For me, sticking with 70% cocoa or higher makes a big difference—it’s rich, satisfying, and doesn’t trigger the same sugar spiral. A square or two is usually all I need.
🥄 Peanut Butter – Comfort and Control
This shows up a lot in my kitchen. It adds richness and helps slow things down when I’m eating something with natural sugars.
🍓 Berries – My Sweet Spot
Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries—these are my go-to when I want something fresh and naturally sweet without overdoing it.
🥑 Avocado – Keeps Me Grounded
Avocado isn’t flashy, but it works. It keeps me full and helps prevent that “what else can I eat?” feeling shortly after meals.
A Quick Look at What I Eat in a Day
Nothing fancy—just real food that helps keep things steady.
Breakfast:
Cereal with berries, a dollop of peanut butter, and unsweetened vanilla oat milk
(or sometimes yogurt with berries and chia seeds)
Midday / Lunch:
Something simple—eggs, a salad with avocado, or leftovers from dinner
Snack:
Apple with peanut butter or a small handful of almonds
Dinner:
Balanced plate—protein, veg, and something like rice, pasta, or potatoes (kept reasonable)
After Dinner (if needed):
A square or two of dark chocolate (70% or higher)
The Catch?
None of these foods are magic on their own.
It’s about how you pair them, when you eat them, and how they fit into your day. I’ve learned that balance beats restriction every single time.
Takeaway
Managing sugar cravings isn’t about saying “no” to everything—it’s about finding better “yes” options that actually satisfy you.
These foods help me stay steady, feel full, and still enjoy what I’m eating.
And that’s really the goal.
Better choices, not perfect ones.
