Welcome to my first post…
I stared at this blank page longer than I want to admit.
Not because I don’t have things to say — but because this space matters to me. And when something matters, you want to get it right. Or at least… right enough to begin.
So here’s the truth, straight up: this blog isn’t about perfection. It’s about figuring things out as I go, one meal, one walk, one good-enough choice at a time.
Why I’m here and why this blog exists..
I live with type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed in January 2023, and like a lot of people, my first reaction was a mix of worry, frustration, and okay, now what?
What I didn’t want was a life ruled by food fear, rigid rules, or giving up everything that makes eating — and living — joyful. Especially when Portugal, travel, cafés, home cooking, and the occasional custard tart are part of what makes life feel rich to me.
This space grew out of that tension:
- Wanting to take care of myself
- Wanting to enjoy food
- Wanting real life, not a highlight reel
That’s where my mindset comes in: doing the best I can without chasing perfection.
What You’ll Find Here
Think of this blog as a kitchen table conversation, not a lecture.
Here you’ll find:
- Everyday food stories — at home, in cafés, on the road
- Simple, unfussy recipes that don’t pretend to be miracles
- Honest talk about blood sugar, balance, and listening to your body
- Portuguese flavours, influences, and food culture (because food is always tied to place)
- Little reminders that progress doesn’t have to be loud to be real
I’m not a doctor. I’m not here to tell you what you should eat. I’m just someone living this, paying attention, and sharing what helps.
My Approach to Food (No Whistles, No Alarms)
I believe in:
- Portion awareness, not punishment
- Enjoyment with intention
- Making space for treats instead of pretending they don’t exist
- Adjusting, learning, and moving on — without guilt
Some days are better than others. Some meals land perfectly. Others don’t. Both count.
If you’re diabetic, pre-diabetic, cooking for someone who is, or just tired of being told you’re doing everything wrong — you’re welcome here.
Why I Hope You’ll Come Back
Because this won’t be a one-and-done story.
This is an ongoing conversation. About food, travel, routines, setbacks, wins you almost forget to celebrate, and how life keeps moving whether your glucose meter behaves or not.
I’ll be sharing what I’m learning as I go — and I hope it feels like something you can sit down with, not scroll past.
So pour a coffee (maybe with a little cinnamon and turmeric — I do that), pull up a chair, and stay awhile.
I’m not aiming for perfect here.
Just showing up, learning, and doing the best I can — one day at a time.
