With June being National Dairy Month—and World Milk Day having just passed—it felt like a good moment to look a little closer at something most might use every single day…
What is it?
Milk feels like a small thing.
A splash in coffee. A pour over cereal. Something you reach for without really thinking about it.
But whether it’s almond, soy, oat, or dairy… it’s not quite neutral.
Each one lands a little differently once it’s in your system.
Why?
It comes down to how each type is built.
Some are very low in carbohydrates.
Some bring a bit more protein to the mix.
And some—like oat milk—even when it’s unsweetened, break down a little quicker.
So while they might look the same in a glass…
they don’t all move through the body the same way.
The catch?
There isn’t a single “best” choice that works for everyone.
What’s steady for one person might show up differently for someone else.
And sometimes… something works just fine—until it doesn’t.
My morning (this part surprised me a bit)
Most mornings, I reach for my oat milk.
Unsweetened. Sometimes the original, sometimes vanilla.
It goes into my coffee, or over a bowl of cereal with berries.
And for now?
It doesn’t seem to move my numbers much.
That doesn’t mean it won’t at some point.
But at the moment, it fits into my mornings in a way that feels easy and steady.
Out of curiosity, I started looking a little closer at what I was actually pouring.
- Unsweetened almond milk → very low in carbs
- Unsweetened soy milk → a bit more balanced with protein
- Oat milk → higher in carbs, even without added sugar
- Dairy milk (like 2% or whole) → similar carbs to oat, but with fat that can slow things down
Same kind of habit… just slightly different outcomes depending on the choice.
Nothing dramatic. Just something to notice.
Takeaway
If you’re figuring out what works for you, this might be one of those quiet places to start.
- Unsweetened almond or soy can be steadier options
- Oat milk might still work—especially if your numbers are holding
- Dairy (like 2% or whole) can land differently than expected
It doesn’t have to be a big change.
Just a small awareness.
Because sometimes it’s not the breakfast…
it’s what you pour on it.

Your body has a say in this too.
