Turning 55 (and Letting Life In) 🎂

A couple of weeks ago, I hit a small milestone.

I turned 55.

Now, I won’t pretend it didn’t make me pause for a second. Numbers have a way of doing that. But instead of overthinking it, I decided to do something much simpler—I celebrated.

Nothing over the top. No grand event. Just a really good dinner at a local Vietnamese restaurant. The kind of place where the food is fresh, comforting, and full of flavor without trying too hard. It felt right.

I ordered what I wanted. Enjoyed every bite. Even had a beer.

And later that evening, back at home, I had a no sugar added ice cream cone for dessert.

Simple. Intentional. Enjoyed.

And completely worth it.

The Balance We Talk About… and Sometimes Forget

Living with type 2 diabetes teaches you structure. Discipline. Awareness.

You learn your foods. Your portions. Your patterns. You start building a quiet mental list:

  • These work well for me.
  • These… not so much.
  • These are “once in a while.”

Over time, that list becomes part of how you move through your days. It becomes routine. Familiar.

But here’s the thing I was reminded of on my birthday:

Life isn’t meant to be lived entirely inside the “safe” column.

There has to be space—every now and then—to step just slightly off the path. Not recklessly. Not carelessly. But consciously.

That dinner? That beer? That ice cream cone?

That wasn’t falling off track.

That was living.

Progress Doesn’t Disappear Overnight

There’s a quiet thought that can creep in when you’re managing diabetes:

“If I indulge, am I undoing everything?”

Short answer?

No.

Because this journey isn’t built on one meal. Or one day. Or even one week.

It’s built on patterns.

It’s built on all the mornings you chose better.
All the meals you balanced.
All the times you paid attention when it would’ve been easier not to.

One mindful celebration doesn’t erase that.

If anything, it reinforces something even more important:

You’re in control—not restricted by rules, but guided by awareness.

Permission to Enjoy (Without Guilt Attached)

What made that evening feel good wasn’t just the food.

It was the company—sharing it with my spouse.
The atmosphere.
The ease of being present in the moment.

I wasn’t negotiating with myself.
I wasn’t mentally “punishing” the choice.
I wasn’t saying, â€śI’ll make up for this tomorrow.”

I just… enjoyed it.

And that’s something I think we don’t talk about enough.

Because managing diabetes isn’t just about numbers.

It’s also about mindset.

And sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is allow yourself to experience joy—without attaching regret to it.

A Quick Note From Me

I’m not a doctor or a dietician.

Just someone living with type 2 diabetes, figuring it out one day at a time.

Everyone is different. What works for me may not work for you.

So take what resonates, what you can glean from this… and leave the rest.

The Ongoing List

I still keep that mental list.

Foods I lean into.
Foods I limit.
Foods I save for moments like this.

That list isn’t restrictive—it’s grounding.

It gives me structure when I need it…
and flexibility when I choose it.

Because the goal isn’t perfection.

It never was.

Looking Ahead (One Measured Step at a Time)

Turning 55 didn’t change everything.

But it reminded me of something important:

There is always room to improve.
Always space to learn.
Always another opportunity to make a better choice.

And also—

There should always be room to celebrate.

Balanced choices. Real life. No guilt attached.
