When Your Body Is Trying to Tell You Something

Sometimes the message isn’t loud. Sometimes it’s just a whisper.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month—a time when we often talk about blood sugar, A1C numbers, medications, food and the importance of managing diabetes.

But before there are numbers to measure, appointments to attend or lifestyle changes to make, there is something even more basic:

Listening to our bodies.

Because sometimes our bodies try to get our attention long before we fully understand what they’re trying to tell us.

There is something I think many of us are particularly good at doing.

Ignoring ourselves.

We’re tired? I’ve just been busy.

We’re thirsty? I probably didn’t drink enough water.

Our vision seems a little off? I’ve been staring at a screen too long.

We’re running to the bathroom more often? Must have been that coffee.

Something feels different, but we can’t quite put our finger on it? I’m probably imagining it.

And sometimes, of course, we are right. A bad night’s sleep is just a bad night’s sleep. A headache may simply be a headache. Feeling tired after a particularly busy week doesn’t necessarily mean that something serious is going on.

But sometimes those little things keep happening.

And that’s when it may be worth listening.
